Amusing Ourselves to Death.
The Why: First off, I can't believe this book is as old as it is (1986) because I was struck by how prophetic is was as I was reading it in 2024. I wish I would have read this years ago. It's a book about the influence of media and mediums (types) on society. A quote that heavily influences the book is "the medium is the message", by Marshall McLuhan. At the time of the books publication, Television was the big medium of influence. Personal computers were not yet in wide spread use by the general public and the internet or World Wide Web was just around the corner. If I were to think of a general theme, it would be the analysis of attention and context destruction over time.
